1909. Riverfork, Massachusetts
As she ran up the hillside, she had to pause to catch her breath. She lost half his shoe in a gully a few minutes ago, and now she's forced to kick the other one off. Her clothing was torn, her body covered in mud and wounds. Her black hair, which she was so proud of at other times, hung on her shoulders like a tattered rag. She was gasping. At the foot of the hill, where the forest ended, her pursuers had just emerged from the woods. The barking of chained dogs hit her ear as the tiny figures emerged from the thicket. There must have been about 10 of them, men and women both. She recognized the lackeys from the major, the estate supervisor and two stable boys. Maybe the sky was rumbling, maybe there was a gunfire. The echo reflected from the hills pulled her stomach in a knot, even though she as a Texas girl knew that from that distance there would be little chance of getting hit. She's had her first shock by now. It wasn't panic or fear that controlled her footsteps, it was simply her instincts. She pressed the two palm sized objects wrapped in waxy cloth to her chest and, tightening her muscles, began to move up the slippery hillside. When she reached the top of the hill, she finally found the road. In this part of America, even this barely carriage-wide land scar seemed like a real highway: daily traffic decimated all life in the steps hooves and wheels on the wet road. As a muddy monster, the track meandered through the frayed remains of the forest towards a long line of minecarts, which disappeared behind the destroyed mountain after a quarter of a mile away.
It was already busy at the mine, workers were lingering around the mine shaft as the daily routine has started. Her bare feet sank ankles deep in the mud, as she was tumbling towards the miners. Although her pursuers also made their way up to hill in the meantime, she managed to reached the first buildings made of battered logs. Her arrival caught the attention of the miners in the shadow of the buildings, but the whole situation was so unreal and frightening that it never occurred to her to seek help. She heard the miner’s wolf whistling in surprise, but she could not process the racy remarks. An almost toothless white bearded old man with a charcoal-dusty face, gazed frightened and signaled his helping intention, but the girls just pushed him aside and ran towards the gaping abyss of the shafts...
